On Her Shoulders
US, 2018, 94 min, English, Kurdish and Arabic with English subtitles
Directed by: Alexandria Bombach
Twenty-three-year-old Yazidi genocide and rape survivor Nadia Murad is determined to tell the world her story. Her life is a dizzying array of exhausting undertaking - from giving testimony before the U.N. to visiting refugee camps to soul-bearing media interviews and one-on-one meetings with top government officials.
With deep compassion and a formal precision and elegance that matches Nadia’s calm and steely demeanor, filmmaker Alexandria Bombach follows this strong-willed young woman, who survived the 2014 genocide of the Yazidis, a religious minority in Northern Iraq. After Nadia escaped the hands of her ISIS tormentors she became the voice of her people and their best hope to spur the world to action. But of course, at times the determined advocate and reluctant celebrity longs to lay aside this monumental burden and simply have an ordinary life.
Since 2015, Nadia has been working to bring ISIS before the International Criminal Court on charges of genocide and crimes against humanity. In 2018 she received the Nobel Peace Prize.
